I don't have the exact answer to that, Patty. But what I can tell you is
just what I've witnessed. I saw the Doobies at the Horseshoe Casino in
Bossier City, Louisiana on March 30th, and again on this past Friday at
the Richardson Wildflower Nights Festival. The shows were
almost
the same. They opened with "China Grove" both times and closed with "Listen
to the Music" both times. They do a few of the classic favs at the beginning,
go into about 4-6 songs of their new stuff (off Sibling Rivalry), then
get back into their classic favorites. The show in LA, was a bit longer,
and because the size of the venue was relatively small, they were really
into it. They played some bluesy stuff and really got the crowd on their
feet. My boyfriend and I had asked the guy who was selling merchandise
for them how long they would play and he told us around 45 minutes (they
were the only act). Well, they played 1 hour and 40 minutes. It was so
awesome I just can't even describe it. I'm sure I was the youngest one
there - but that was kinda cool too! When they played in Richardson on
Friday, they were not the only act, (America and Grand Funk Railroad) and
so I'm assuming they had a limited amout of time to work with, although
they did start at 10 and go almost to 11:30. Plus this concert was outdoors
and I think that changes things too.
But, back to your original question...personally, I think that a general
set list is created, but modified from show to show. Plus they may decide
to change it up during a show depending on crowd reaction...that's always
a possibility. They were sure having fun when I saw them, and that in turn,
made me (and everyone else) have fun. Not to mention of course that I love
their music. But, they've certainly still "got it" and appreciate it too
it seems. The best is at the end of the show when typically the performers
would just end the last song, say good night and exit the stage. They don't.
They finish "Listen to the Music" and then as the crowd is going wild,
they gather at the front of the stage, join together and take a bow or
two. Then they start throwing their guitar picks and drum sticks and what
ever else they can out to the crowd. And eventually, mosey off stage. That
to me was the coolest part. It said a lot about them.
Sorry for such a long reply, but I wanted to share what I had experienced.
Can't wait to do it again!

Since I am anxiously awaiting the DOOBIES visit to Atlantic City this
summer, I'm wondering about the process of how the set list is put
together.
Are the lists decided before the tour starts or are they customized
for each
city?
Curious in NJ,
Patty
