Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) will run on this at a respectable speed. What you 
might find is that after you've downloaded and installed updates it runs slow 
until you reboot it again - that's install reboot and then reboot again.

Surely though it can't be a big deal just to buy a bit more memory - undo a few 
screws and put that in. I reckon if you shop around on the net you'll get 1gb 
for under £20. Unfortunately I can't make the next LUG meeting otherwise I 
would have brought along a few screwdrivers.

I'm assuming the processor is something around 1Ghz with above.

Alternatively if you don't want to upgrade the memory you could try Ubuntu 
Light (Lite?).
