After a bit of Googling, I managed to get the Creative CT6840 working with
Cheese, QTox and Venom, but not Skype ;-(
I'm seriously considering trying to get my hands on a low-res webcam from
Maplin or PC World. The trouble is, all the low-res ones seem to be noname
brands, so there's no guarantee they'll work any better than the Creative
CT6840.
What I did was to get a Trust Primo webcam from Argos
(http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9131451.htm).[1]
This works fine as far as video is concerned (640x480), but the audio is c**p.
So what I have is video from the Trust and audio from the Logitech and Skype
seems
to work fine. I've only tested it over our internal network so far, but there
was zero
packet loss and crystal clear video and sound.
I'm presuming it will work OK in Tox, when they eventually get their act
together on
audio, etc, but the object of the exercise was to get video comms with my mother
and this way means that she doesn't have to change anything at her end :-)
That webcam looks just like the one that I got from the market for 50
pence a few weeks ago, that I opened up and it did not have a microphone
in it. did you have to add the string env
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype to the
startup to get it to work?
I presume that you saw these:
