I confirm you can get existing translations for countries and towns from these files. You need to have the gettext package installed and then you can display existing translations using the following commands: $ msgunfmt /usr/share/locale/th/LC_MESSAGES/iso_3166.mo $ msgunfmt /usr/share/locale/th/LC_MESSAGES/iso_3166_2.mo Of course you just need to change the directory of the language code (here "/th") if you're looking for another target language. Writing a script that automatically collects existing translations for a given application, say Kgeography, should not be that complicated.
