Yeah, vpopmail keeps changing their APIs in ways I have no idea what to
do to fix it. So here's my solution for now:

You can always use vpopmail's checkpassword binary or access its
database some other way (passdb/userdb sql?)

I've switched to vpopmail 5.4.30 (last *stable* release) and all works 
as expected.
