I think the point is less restrictive than that:
  Productivity

And having the graphic there at all is going to be a waste of space
(IMO) so it's really just a matter of making it do something so it's
"less of" a waste of space.

I think making it a "go" button with a user-definable
search/action/url onclick would make it most functional. That way at
least it doesn't always hit the same URL. Or, provide the option to
hit the 'link' tag of the current search-in-the-box (which is usually
to the site that provides the searches basic function). That'd let you
do things like type gg (google) and click the graphic to visit google
when you wanted to do something like search one of the other
functions, check your adsense, or do something else on the site that
either you're not familiar with the DQSD syntax or you desire the
interactivity of it.

Focus has to be on DQSD for it to work, of course. ;)
