I wouldn't really miss it, and it looks like I'm probably the only one
stuck on F8 as a handler. It's good to know ctrl+B works. I don't think
I've ever needed it, but noticed the functionality at one point when I
bumped escape. I do use ESC to clear DQSD (two presses if not
immediately typed prior) often when I am digging through the history to
see code syntax from a previous search. With a multiline band, it's too
painful to try to delete back to the search name. Oooohhh... That's an
idea.

Something I would use frequently (on the same train of thought) is a
stacked ESC handler. Each press clears the last word-barrier section
from the current search text. For example, with the following search
text visible ESC would perform the following actions:

  gg mysterious key handlings /def
  gg mysterious key handlings
  gg mysterious key
  gg mysterious
  gg

That would solve the retyping problem I face when I want to recreate
"most" of a previous search.
