 Not necessary.  But you can trim it down to only contain actual aliases that you want.  Most of my localaliases is listed below. (note some of mine use the tab and some use the | as the delimiter.  i really should standardize it.)

 > Is >>, Configure ,  Reload the same as entering 1 or I or | or ! in the text box? In other words, I can't tell what the character "DQSD by entering ! in the text box." is so I pressed Configure > Reload.
Yes.  The character is an exclamation point !

Also, am I correct that I would always have to include the prefix d ?   If so, it's not much different than what works now = ": octogenaria" In fact, "d" or ":" saves a step, as I don't have to mouse the >> to get to dictionary.com or Merriam.
Yes d and : would be the same thing.  I did not realize that Merriam Webster already had the colon ":" as an alias .  This would make adding an alias for d for Merriam Webster redundant.

// localaliases.txt
// ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
// This is where you can add your own aliases. This file will not be overwritten
// when the toolbar is updated.
//
// The format is as follows:
//               <alias>|<action>|<title>|<description>|<category>
//
// A single <tab> or pipe "|" is used as a separator.
// The symbol %s is a placeholder that will be replaced with the user-entered
// search term upon execution.
//
// The <title> and <description> are used in the help window to describe the
// purpose of the alias.
//
// The <category> can be used to define a category for the search to be listed
// under in the help and the menus.  If no category is defined, it will be listed
// under the 'Shortcuts' category.
//
// NOTE: Only the <alias> and <action> fields are required, BUT currently all
// preceeding fields must be supplied.  I.e., this will work:
//               <alias>|<action>|<title>
// But, this will not:
//               <alias>|<action>|||<category>
//
// (I.e., consecutive delimiters will be collapsed to a single delimiter.)
//
// ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
// The following are some example aliases that you can use or modify for your
// own purposes:
//
// movie|ym
// mov|movie
