Thank you, Jim, Mike and Pete,

The weather stripping sounds like an easy solution. I guess that it does not get very hot down there below the tubes, just up in the chimneys.

I had the same situation on an L4. I did not know if the seal was
needed or not but to be safe I installed a seal made from gasket
material from an automotive shop.

Some one else might have a better or different idea.

As long as we are on the L4B - My project is to completely cleanup an
L4B (Serial # 6021 - about 1978) which I have had since the early
1980s. It did not have any issues when I boxed it up about 1984. Now I
have opened it up and am cleaningit up - bsically a stiff paint brush
and vacuum cleaner. Along the base partitions below the finales, as
part of the cooling system, there were two rubber or fiber seals which
were held to the base cover with a tape adhesive. All that was left
was dust and the tape on the bottom case.

Does anyone have a source for replacing this seal? Does this really
matter? Did all L4Bs have this seal or was it something a previous
owner added?
