Probably a very good idea--then vendors could publish very simple, small 
binary loadable objects (hals) that do so.  It would probably only be 
reasonable for such features that only need to be turned on/off somehow, as 
opposed to features that require more complicated interaction.  I suppose it 
should be possible to expose hooks for them, but that might incur too big a 
price.

Otoh, vendors might be even more scared from this as it's much easier to 
reverse engineer a small module that does exactly what you want to learn how 
to do than to learn the same thing reverse engineering an entire binary 
driver if that's indeed what they're afraid of... (of course, publishing 
something like this in the first place removes the need to reverse engineer 
it--except in the case of supporting other architectures).
