Duplicating a lot of work in the drivers which would be better
centralized in the driver independent infrastructure.

That's what Xinerama is for.

Must have missed that, the major motivation behind this would be 3D
acceleration though.


Unfortunately, I just recalled a possibly major problem: AFAIK the 3D
engine can only render to a rectangle up to 2048 pixels wide and high.
That would be pretty limiting, in particular when the heads are side by
side.
