BTW. Here's an updated pair of patches. These ones should compile, but I haven't done much testing yet.

Looks like I broke big-endian, too (sorry Michel).

No worries, you didn't. :)

Are you sure? The EMIT_ELT macro isn't being used any more & I'm just accessing dest directly, as in 'dest[offset] = elt'...

Everything I've tried so far (glxgears, armagetron, quake2, bzflag,
morph3d) seems to work perfectly. Maybe the ugliness indeed is no
necessary? :)

I'm afraid not, I understand what you mean now, I guess the broken paths
are rarely used.

Actually, I changed the context mid stream. I did originally mean that I'd broken big-endian in general, but apparently I haven't. Then, I wondered if you have a test case for the original brokenness that we're trying to address with this patch.

If big-endian works for those apps, I don't see any reason it shouldn't work in general.

What about things that were broken with the old version. Is there a list of test cases that we can run through?

I wonder myself. I can only say that it doesn't fix the HW TCL problems
e.g. in bzflag, but I guess that was to be expected. Felix pointed out
the quakeforge console, which is fixed with the combination of yours and
his patches indeed.

OK, time to reread old emails...
