But isn't this expected? If you increase the timeout then the driver waits
longer for the timeout so the screen 'hangs' until the timeout expires (or the
relevant reset code happens) - thus frames per second will drop. Increasing the
timeout avoids system lockups but does make the screensavers jerky.

Yes, these screensavers do seem cpu intensive when they kick in. Some have a
'nice' option to help.
