Hi,

I'm not sure freedesktop.org can host anoncvs, though it's possible we
could for DRI. I know GNOME, KDE, Mozilla, and other huge projects'
anoncvs would require more load than freedesktop.org server can
handle. DRI anoncvs traffic may be smaller.

However, we do plan to have anoncvs mirrors of whatever projects have
their master copy on cvs.freedesktop.org. Currently there's one on
codefactory.se but I think we can get some of the GNOME/KDE mirrors to
copy freedesktop.org also in short order.

The other issue with hosting anoncvs on the freedesktop.org server
directly is security; pserver really is no more secure than telnet. I
would rather keep the main server ssh-only and keep pserver on
mirrors, using rsync-via-ssh or whatever to sync the mirrors.

If DRI doesn't want to change its main cvs repository we may be able
to arrange with any anoncvs mirrors to also pick up the DRI
repository, I don't know. Or we could do something rube goldberg like
mirror the DRI repo read-only to the freedesktop repo and from there
the freedesktop.org mirrors would pick it up automatically, just to
save the mirrors figuring out two things.

This change is all about anon cvs, so it's important to get it right.

If we're going to be relying on external anoncvs mirrors, we could do that with less disruption by staying at sourceforge, I suppose?

I'm not really familiar with who the anoncvs mirrors are, how they work, or why they're able to provide effective anon cvs when sourceforge can't...
