Thank you Alex, I'll download driconf and give it a shot. I need to become
more familiar with the Wiki. Note that it was a little confusing that the
word Download was highlighted in the Driconf document but it went to the DRI
download page instead of the 'download section below' like I was expecting.
You could also leave sync as the default and add driconf to the FAQ.
The closest FAQ I saw was

Or even a new FAQ (I can see my question popping up frequently when the new
DRI is released).
Of course, it all comes down to performance vs. appearance as the default.
