The savage-2-0-0-branch is not yet sufficient to get DRI enabled as it still lacks the 3D driver. Rafael Máximo is working on porting that driver to Mesa 5 which is necessary in order to compile it in the current DRI CVS tree. The only way to get hardware accelerated 3D at the moment is to download XFree86 4.2.0 sources, apply the VIA code drop from http://www.linux.org.uk/~alan/S3.zip and compile it yourself. It takes a little tweaking to get it to compile, though.
