You don't need to backup /etc/X11. /usr/X11R6 is enough. I wouldn't
bother making a huge backup though. You could just rely on apt and
reinstall the Debian package when you want to get rid of your own build.

Before you try compiling your own DRI you could also try if the Debian
package synaptics works better than the touchpad driver you compiled
yourself.

Finally Michel Dänzer distributes Debian packages built from the DRI
tree. They are not updated as frequently as the binary snapshots but I
believe they also support IGP Radeons by now. See
