On Linux and FreeBSD only, and there isnt yet a consensus on the Fbdev+DRI+text console+security+hotplug pile other than that it needs to be resolved. Hopefully the kernel summit in July will provide some more definitive answers on plans and once Linus has agreed to something (or destroyed all the ideas one by one 8)) it becomes easier to plan. In the shorter term however the sooner the current DRI is in the current X server the better. The kernel expects recent DRI, many users require it (eg for all modern laptops) with Linux and FreeBSD.
