DirectFB is maintained.

Do you mean using DRI with DirectFBGL? See my website 
http://www.sci.fi/~syrjala/gl/ There's a Mesa tarball (5.x based) that 
works with DirectFBGL.

FWIW I run DirectFB (exclusively) on all of my systems (desktop w/ matrox 
+ 2 laptops w/ mach64).
