I started looking at the xorg ati driver as well.  Here are a few of my 
ideas/comments:

Need to work the current driver to bypass pre 520 mode and 3d.  Not sure about 
2d.

Finding and using the mode registers don't seem to be a big problem.  Just 
need to do it.

The I2C interface has been replaced with a byte based state machine (i.e. no 
more bit banging).
