My response was "I find it more readable". I don't like the & or * next
to the type because I find that less readable, and parens around an
evaluation in a return is more readable to me.

This is just my preference, and obviously our preferences differ. No
one style provides a clear advantage over the other, so I shouldn't have
to prove my preferences when you haven't proven yours (Can one even
prove one style is better than another? This is very individualistic.) And
it really isn't worth further debate or time as this is exactly what I was
trying to avoid (the death-spiral of coding style discussions).
