Mark, I'm hunting for some time to address this further. Until then it seems an appropriate issue to get a JIRA issues created for, can you open one and attach the threads to it for us? I had made some decisions concerning blocks in 1.5.2 to assure theme backward compatibility and can review the default blocking behavior in detail.
