Thanks - yes, I have been running from [dspace-source]/dspace/ - I've been investigating the usual suspects (permissions, files older than latest build etc), but no joy . . . > The next thing I was going to suggest overlays, as Claudia did. That worked! I placed my images in [dspace-src]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/webapp/image, and then rebuilt using the same commands as before, and low and behold, images appeared - thanks Claudia :-) So, no idea why images weren't picked up when placed directly in the source, but the overlays have worked for me, so tick, and on to the next challenge!
