Once upon a time ago, I hacked into my High School's Macs (1993) by holding
down the space bar to open the extensions .... I was able to turn off the
extensions manager.

I don't remember what they were using as password protection, but it acted
like this Norton thing you describe.

Norton used to include a tool with Norton Utilities that would put a
password into the disk at some fairly low level. It would ask for a
password immediately, before booting had really even started (I think even
before the "happy mac"?). Some of my clients used it and it frightened me
because if you forgot the password, you couldn't even boot from a floppy
and mount the drive just to copy your data.
