I'm not sure how having a 'hacked' driver helps. I don't know if there
is any code from the CD driver that is kept in memory after you restart
so you can boot off the CD. Maybe that immediately after the RAM test,
the system will look for the CD driver on disk if the 'C' key is down.
But maybe the code is in the ROM of some Macintosh, but not others. I've
never read the real story about this.
Anyway, I did follow the instructions on ResExcellence
<http://www.resexcellence.com/> to 'help' the Apple CD/DVD driver to
recognize many CD-ROM drives, the latest being my Panasonic KXL783A.
