Dude.... don't do this. The compounds used in todays batteries would
make the EPA sweat. Sure, they are small amounts -- but they are
still nasty. Curiousity has killed more than just the cat. Be
content with a drawing from a "how it works" book.
Or, take a class on redox chemistry (that will really frighten you)
