I have yet to find a distributor or source in the U.S which is willing to
sell larger
size Li-Ion cells. Say 4.2V per cell, in a 4/3AA size. Let me know where I
can get those.

True, miniaturizing the circuit card to fit into a specific 'pack' is always

However, there seems to have been a slew of newer battery monitoring chips
available on the market recently which are available. These are "all in
one"
hybrids which will provide all the necessary functions and take up very
little
real estate. Programming machine code for this application isn't too bad.

Well, our beloved 2400 gains some weight to achieve the same
energy displacement of our Li-Ion. To fit into the existing battery 'form
factor' we'd be giving up a substantial amount of run-time. You'll still
end up having to replace the smart battery electronics and perhaps
even making changes to the pmu code. That would be an interesting project
to take on. I really haven't thought about how you would approach it.
