I would strongly recommend against the Vaio and other ultrathins/ultralights unless
you really know what you are getting into, and what you really want from a laptop.
Regarding things like vMac, they really aren't solutions. They are essentially
novelties.....vMac itself is free, and is mainly useful for emulating the Mac
Plus......I personally like it because it lets you run the really old Mac OS's and see
what everything used to be like.
There are more advanced products that are a little more workable. Specifically,
there's Gemulator SoftMac, which emulates an 020 or 030 based Mac, and fairly quickly.
There's also a product called Fusion 2.0, which emulates an 040 ROM. You will have
to obtain the ROM yourself, as they don't provide this.
These products are a little flakey, but they basically work. I've used Fusion on my
Portege to play Escape Velocity.
Most emulated things are pretty slow though.......don't think you can buy a Mac
emulator and have it be like a Macintosh in the ultrathin form factor.
And if you really are serious about an ultrathin, don't limit yourself to the Vaio.
Yes, it's the big famous one....but it is not the best machine out there any more, and
it isn't the best value. And as cool as it is that it has firewire, you will realize
that it is useless when you see the results of digital video outputted back through
the firewire (i.link) port.
