Hello everyone:

I am on the verge of defecting from the trusty Duo 2300...a hard drive
failure on the Duo allowed me to pick up a cut-rate 7600 for the same
price, and it is hard to go back to Duo after tasting a 604.

In any case, my Duo is up and running with a used 750 Apple drive (instead
of a Toshiba 1.3). Since I don't want to get rid of the Duo, I am looking
for ways to still use it. However, when I tried to network it with the
7600 in a Appletalk setup, the Duo REALLY slowed down. Without Appletalk
the machine is still usable; with Appletalk it is hard to justify.

Since I'd like to continue to use the Duo hooked up to the network, I'm
wondering if this is typical, and if so, if there a way to counteract the
slowdown (I never had to use Appletalk all the time before because I only
had one Mac). Or is the result of a slower, 750 meg hard drive?

Also, for those of you following the various threads on the GV 19.2 and OS
8, I am glad to report I re-installed GV 2.5.5 and the Powerport 19.2
extensions. It seems to work fine, except I can't turn off the status
display when I am faxing (and the status display is white on the grey 8.5
toolbar). Also, GV does have a new script for OT/PPP 3.0 on their web
site, and it appears to work just fine. So far, I don't have a problem
with the computer not recognizing the internal modem.

An my final question is, has anyone tried to run the various UNIX flavors
on a Duo? I know LinuxPPC won't work, but I heard reports that MkLinux
might work, and also I remember there was a commercial UNIX available for
NuBus PowerMacs, although the price was too high -- somewhere around $300.
I am thinking if the Duo can be converted into a file server, I could
justify keeping it around for a little longer.

It is nice to see there is a group of people out there keeping the Duo alive!
