Thanks Marc, as always, for setting the record straight:
However, I also mention software as a culprit too in the same paragraph you are
referencing. But, certainly bus speed is not as critical concern as I have made
it and I suffer from having seen this as the down and dirty excuse used to
justify this problem on this list time and time again. I believe my vigor comes
from seeing this age old problem crop up over and over and I figured I'd "nip"
it.
Internet download speeds have always been a mystery to most lay people and I have
yet to get a straight answer from co called experts how to calculate and verify
such speeds. Of course the big problem with the Duo is that regardless of the
transfer speeds of the Duo in a closed system like SCSI or peer-to-peer Ethernet,
the software interface and numerous hardware concerns like RAM, bus speeds, etc.
all contribute. For most of us, setting up a computer, installing a browser and
surfing the web means using bloated software, like Netscape Navigator, which on
the Duo even slows typing to a crawl. In my opinion, the 2300 is an excellent
machine, but all the tweaking in the world is not going to make it substantially
faster than it is. That's why I say investing in DSL or cable modem technology to
support the Duo alone and being disappointed when you don't get the same results
as someone using a Pentium III or G3 machine, is pointless. Regardless of the
reason the Duo won't respond faster, it just doesn't and anything faster than a
56K modem is overkill.
