Paul,
Sorry for the (relatively OT) rant. I should have focused my comments about
Kansas to just Elizabeth Dole. I am glad to hear changes will be
forthcoming in the education status of Kansas graduates.
It was Mrs. Dole (as then DOT head) who instituted many of the requirements
now used. The knee-jerk response to the downing of PSA 1771 reflected
bureaucracy at its best, the changes solving absolutely _none_ of the safety
concerns arising from the investigation.
As far as I know, there are no mass detectors used, at least, not in the
sense that one would find in a lab. Many of the X-ray machines are basic
junk (Other than inspections, I wonder how one would tell a malfunction?).
I'd like to see much better equipment. The technology that would detect
explosives(EPR and NMR) without harming film or laptops has been around for
over 40 years.
Once again, sorry. I lost a couple of friends in PSA 1771 and feel very
strongly about the pathetic lack of airport security and immature, knee-jerk
reactions characterized as "security measures".
Ed
