Documentation says: "If there is text left in the CW keyboard, pressing the Esc key will empty the CW keyboard. Pressing the Esc key with no characters in the CW keyboard will stop adding QSOs."
Never bothered me because, though I use the function, a touch of the paddle aborts sending... which suits me fine. Re documented use... I don't really like it because if you hit escape near the end of a transmission you can inadvertently escape real-time entry... something you normally are not in a hurry to do... I think a shift-escape or CTL-escape or possible F9 toggle would me more appropriate to exit real-time entry as John suggested, and I would also change it when the special keys are not enabled for consistency.
