I am using the ByteRunner http://www.byterunner.com PCI internal cards.
With the 2 serial ports on the mainboard and 8 more from one PCI-400HS-9 and
one PCI-410HSP-9 I have 10 serial ports. I have tested all of them with
DXBase2003 beta and they all work for radio control, rotor control and tnc
connection for packet. The PCI-410HSP-9 provides a parallel ports as well,
thus my system has 2 parallel ports. I have tested the parallel ports with
a laser printer, they work, but I do not use the parallel ports at all. If
I had it to do over again I would buy a single 8 port com card from
Byterunner since I do not need an extra parallel port. I do CW generation
using the W5XD multifunction keyer http://www.writelog.com/ordering.htm
which connects via a serial port and works well. I have found that you
cannot rely upon the PC to do CW generation..to do so results in very
choppy, inaccurately timed CW. The W5XD does the generating externally and
is excellent (but expensive!).

While this does not address your USB question, it seems to me that the goal
is to have reliable com ports and many of them and what I have done is a
solution which works.
