The TOTAL number of shares outstanding is available for any publicly traded
company. That number is 100% of the company. You can take their market cap
and divide by the price of a share to get total shares outstanding. Or you
can go by the SEC filing, which for last quarter showed that MSFT had 10.715
billion shares outstanding. If you own 1000 shares of MSFT, you own
.0000093327% of Microsoft.

I personally think TGC stock is more like preferred stock, since preferred
stock pays a fixed return but doesn't represent a percentage of ownership of
the company like common stock. There's nothing wrong with preferred stock; I
like preferred stock and have owned some in the past.
