Trailer Number is a bit of a sticky subject in that in a lot of cases the
trailer number is not known at the time the 856 is developed. I've found
that in those cases, a call to the Trading Partner explaining the situation
will result in the T.P. saying that even though they require a Trailer
Number, all '9's in the trailer number will be OK. This not only applies to
LTL shipments, but also to private parcel shipments, such as UPS, RPS etc.

Subject: Advanced Ship Notice

All,

Does anyone know if there are any industry standards for the length of the
Bill
of Lading and Trailer number fields? We are working on creating a corporate
standard for the Advanced Ship Notice.

Thanks,
