The technology that keeps VANs in business is obsolete. In a world where the
only means of establishing external interfaces was through a VAN they had a
monopoly. That's no longer the case because the Internet changed that
forever. We are programmed to believe that only VANs can move messages to a
mailbox and  there's this security bogeyman that would snatch our POs off
the Web. Technically you don't even need an interconnect agreement with any
VAN since all you'll need is the ftp address, a login id of the trading
partner, an inbox and outbox. That's how we transmit data to DOD today. I
can see that maybe you'll need encryption but that too isn't an impossible
scenario. I think this monopoly is what's retarding the growth of EDI, these
hidden costs.

Let's rally for open systems which may well be one of the problems XML is
trying to solve.
