Bill,
I think you're a bit confused. The note for DE#1331 refers the implementer
to and external code source - Code Source 237.
If you then go to Appendix C, page C.5, you'll find the reference to Code
Source 237. I've quoted it in full below. I've also quoted the note for
DE#1331 below.
Please read this note carefully. It says the following:
1. these are the code to identify a place of service
2. codes are listed AS A COURTEST for the implementer
3. the listed code set is thought to have been complete at the time the 837P
was published
4. the external code list is subject to change
5. the only codes that are valid are those from the actual external code
source, i.e., the Electronic Media Claims National Standard Format,
available from HCFA
6. the codes in the HCFA code set take precedence over those in the
implementation guide
7. the codes listed in the 837P implementation guide are NOT an internal X12
code list; rather, they are EXTERNAL codes established by HCFA
So, as an implementer of this transaction I would obtain the code list from
HCFA and use it to validate the generated or received code value.
Does this make it any clearer?
"Use this element for codes identifying a place of service
from code source 237. As a courtesy, the codes are listed
below, however, the code list is thought to be complete at
the time of publication of this implementation guideline.
Since this list is subject to change, only codes contained in
the document available from code source 237 are to be
supported in this transaction and take precedence over any
and all codes listed here."

What does all this mean?
if you look into the 837 Professional 4010X098 May2000
Implementation guide and go to page 173 under the
segment CLM Element 05 subelem 01 id# 1331 Facility
Type Code, there is a grayed out note below with a
list of valid code values.
When I read this text I understand it to be that there
is an Internal Code list provided with 29 values and
anything other than those valid 29 should then be for
compliancy sake then bounced off the 237 external code
list which seems to be a superset of this valid list
and it may be subject to change?
any part of this clear to anyone?
any thoughts or wisdom?
thanks
Bill
