Well said, Ryan. To add my 2 cents, companies need to stay within their
core competencies. Mike, your supplier should stick with shipping.

There are other ways of charging for EDI without EDI sending out invoices
for their services. For instance, we will pay a little more for a shipment
if the carrier can send us 214s, but then we will pay a little less for 210s
(carrier invoice for a shipment). Our customers may pay a little more for
our items, if we do 850 and or 856.

If anything, EDI charges should be included in the cost of an item or
service.

        Subject: Charging for EDI

In my opinion, there shouldn't be any passing on of charges for EDI,
by any
Trading Partners. I've just been faced with the situation where we
are
being required to become TP's with one of our customers
(us=supplier;
them=home improvement gorilla) and are going to be charged a
percentage of
sales (1/4 - 1/2 percent) for being an EDI customer. I understand
that they
have costs associated with EDI, but -- NEWSFLASH!!!! -- so do we!!!
Now
it's going to cost us even more.

And to add to the insult, there is wording in the TPA that states
that
neither party will be liable for the costs the other incurs for
exchanging
        messages.

Their "explanation" for the discount we will be assessed: We will
both be
benefiting from EDI, so we should share the savings.

How about this: You keep your savings, and we'll keep ours (so far,
when
figuring in EDI costs, we won't have any savings for years).

I guess this is the life of being a banana, rather than the gorilla.
Is
there any support out there for us bananas?
