There is no way to tell, of course, how many helpful private replies
these poor souls get.  It is better for everyone that the discussion
does move to a more private venue, but anyone wanting to gauge how
"helpful" the edi-l list is to newbies will see only the public replies.


My own experience has been that lists like this can be incredibly
responsive when you have made a certain minimum amount of effort in
posting your question, and incredibly hostile when you haven't.  What is
that minimum amount?  It depends, I guess, on the mood and workload of
the other members of the list.
