can I just jump in here a minute? Having once been in Newby to both this list and to EDI I've always found it a little disturbing at the way questions are answered here. Sometimes people ask what seems to be a dumb question because they don't know what question to ask. When I was first tapped to do EDI at my former employer, I knew nothing about it and neither did anyone else in the company. All we knew is that our major customer required us to be compliant or they would pull their business. There was no budget for a consultant and my only teachers were the Sterling workstation manuals. it was an uncomfortable position to be in. Especially since there were not as many online resources as there are now.
I understand that is very frustrating for so many jobs to be outsourced, particularly outside one's country. However, unless someone is obviously faking knowledge of EDI in order to get a position, why punish those who could benefit from your experience? I know that once I was able to meet someone who just that five minutes explaining the hierarchical levels of the advanced ship notice, the light went on and I was able to run with it. Don't get me wrong, now that I've been in this industry for quite some time, I recognize that there are some people could just can't grasp the concepts of EDI. There is a long line of former assistants who just couldn't get the basics. I would hope that many people who ask for help here are either just looking for some basic guidance or, especially my personal case, to bump ideas about how to handle certain processes from other people who may have more experience when I do or who can look at my problem with a fresh set of eyes and maybe put me in the right direction. One thing I have learned over the years, is that there comes a point when beating your head against a wall doesn't help that asking for help may give you that one piece of information that is required to come up with a good solution. Just my .02. Your mileage may vary. I agree completely. Poking fun at the village idiot makes you a bully. Lashing out at the overseas newbie who just took your next gig may be satisfying (I confess to being somewhat guilty of that on at least one occasion), but it is nonproductive and unprofessional. If your clients (or employers) are only concerned about getting the job done for the least money and aren't concerned about quality, expertise, reliability, etc., then you probably need to be looking elsewhere. If you think the "clueless" are genuine and sincere, you have the time, and you want to help them out, go ahead. If not, ignore them. They'll go away on their own without your barbs.
