Hi Charlotte,

You bring up a good point and an interesting dimension.

Not to play devil's advocate, as I was the person who actually championed
the cause of the clueless, but there's a big difference between "asking a
dumb question" and "asking a question dumbly."

Your message was demonstrably from someone quite articulate, with a definite
problem and an urgent need. If I can put words in your mouth, your request
may very well have been

"I am new to EDI. We are running on Version X.XX of the Acme Translator
Company product. We have a problem with our major supplier and face daily
fines if we can't get our ASN working correctly. I am new to EDI and to my
position and I [have a question on|need to understand the workings of] the
hierarchical levels of an ASN."

Contrast that with

"HI all, i am sathya..wolud like know about EDI more...But i am kid to this
technology...just kno abt file formets and mappings... p;lz help me."

Who do you think is going to get the more thoughtful, reasoned and most of
all the most USEFUL reply?

It all goes back to what Mr. Douglas said; Act like a professional, frame
your question in a professional way, and above all don't act like a fool.

However, my original point remains; one does not need to stoop to a fool's
level to answer a fool.

Thanks for contributing.
