Parsing an 835 and even an 837 according to the X12 syntax rules is not
brain surgery. What is both brain surgery and rocket science however is
correctly applying the HIPAA-mandated X12N implementation guide rules,
either during or post-parsing. This is where the novice and uninitiated will
fall into a tar pit.

Art,
This is not brain surgery. I just completed the parsing of an 835 file. All
I had to do was clear all the negativity that people such as yourslef put
out there about hte X12 standard. I read the implementation guide cover to
cover and was able to completely see the loops and the rules as to what can,
will, or not show up in the file you parse. I see that you are a Lead
Consultant and see how you would want to keep the number of players to a
minimum but stop with the negativity there is enough work out there for
everyone.
You know once I finish this parser (and proove that it works) I am
considering putting out a free video on how to read the x12 standard and
pseudo parse it. All any programmer needs in order to write a parser in
their own language.
By the way I started to write the 837 in tandum.

To be perfectly honest, you are on a fool's errand. Whoever hired you will
pay a fortune, and end up with something that only you will be able to
maintain. You may as well ask how to design an airplane, because your
employer wants to go to Hawaii.

There are already many excellent parsers that are proven, well documented,
maintained and supported. People who know them well still have their hands
full mapping an 837 - it is the most complex X12 document in use, according
to many. For you, a self-confessed newbie, to be designing the parser
knowing neither the X12 standard nor the 837 document, is asking for
failure. Please reconsider, for your client's sake.

Subject: [EDI-L] Newbie needing to learn 837 parsing

I am working on a project but need to learn how to parse an 837 file. I
can parse all kinds of documents but this is the first time I have come
across this EDI/X12 thing. Not a bad standard to be honest. But here is
the thing I have to not use a third party to parse, I will program a
parser in ColdFusion. But what I need is to learn how to read the "EDI
Transaction Set 837 Implementation Guide". Does anybody know of a book
that will help or a tutorial maybe? I have looked but all I get is
people who want to sell me their parser. I dont need someones code I
just need to understand this document to where I can write the parser.
any help woould be appreciated.
