I have seen 862  (inbound) TREATED as though it were an 850

As far as what factors you'd have to consider to do that, you'd consider the 
exact same factors you would consider had you received an '850.'  Or an 
'830' (which I've also seen treated as an '850').

The only other factor I'd consider is, if I am going out to  my customers to 
tell them I can now accept their purchase orders electronically in ANSI ASC 
X12 format the number '862' would never cross my lips.

Call me crazy, but I'd ask my customers to use the "850 purchase order" 
transaction set to convey "purchase orders."
