Travis (and others with his thoughts);

You are also right. But I still hold to the fact that the first recourse of
any TP related question is to go straight to the source. That's still going to
be your best avenue for finding TP related answers.

And you're also right when you mention that the person you did deal with at ABC
Company may have moved on, been forced out or moved up, and the person there
now has not a clue - both

Sure, it's an excellent idea to find "other" sources to answer questions for
you or to provide a valid thought or concept for a reply to your query. This
list has been an excellent source of reference for Me, as well as for others,
and so have other places that I "haunt" on the web. It's a way to connect, as
well, with other professionals - to learn of new ideas and ways of thinking
besides what we know. It's a way to open up to different concepts and controls
and ways of processing things that we may not have seen before.

But, again, it's still your best bet to go to the TP - the source - when
looking for an answer to a question as Elan was asking. Ken and I both touched
on the concepts of the person no longer being there or being ... less than EDI
knowledgeable. That person could just be a know-little clerk that just
monitors the EDI jobs and alerts a higher up in MIS when there's a problem...
They probably will not know the answer to Elan's question about what to put
where in the ASN. But, as I'd mentioned, the person receiving that ASN - ABC
Company - is still the best source for Elan's answer because they're the ones
that will get the data, and will need to process that data and that shipment.
It's ABC Company that will fail the ASN if the answer we give Elan is not what
they want - it's ABC Company that will fine Elan (those wonderful "profit
centers" called chargebacks!) if the ASN is not correct and does fail.

That's why I would (and have and did) suggest going to the source - ABC Company
- and finding what data they want and where. They're like Me - the hub - it's
their way or the highway.

I agree with most of Ken's remarks and also Craig's, but I'm surprised that
you're both so surprised at this occurrance....
I've dealt with customers with many layers of beureacracy or farmed-out EDI
departments that can't answer anything that isn't on the answer key taped to
the side of their monitor.
"Someone that knew what was going on must have created these requirements",
goes through my head - but how many days will pass before I find them, if I
find them? How much time can you burn verifying your contact list up to date?
Sure, it's important - but so are a lot of other things that eat time out of
your day.

The people posting these requests are just looking for the right answers. You
might even be proud they think you're (the list) the best place to get the
right answer.
