Agreed. However, I suspect that the address in question was in an EDIFACT interchange as opposed to something X12-based (the German signature is a hint). In that case, the max length is 35 (segment UNB), I believe, instead of the 15 offered in X12's ISA. That said, indeed, the spaces are not prohibited by the standard. "Our software doesn't seem to like it" suggests that the programmer made an invalid assumption.
