No, to all three questions, just asking. I don't need to know every ID out
there. I need to know only the ID's for my trading partners, and, believe it
or
not, they're usually pretty happy to supply the info.

Now, if you were to offer an up to date, guaranteed current to the minute
directory of actual, real person type EDI contacts, for ALL of my current and
future trading partners, that, my friend, might be worth a few pennies. Be
careful before you reply, this task could take every hour of the rest of your
life and still not be complete.

Leah

Outdated Trading Partner Data!

If it were free, would you endorse it? Lobby your VAN to use it?

What if it were $1/month for each QID listed? To be paid by the VAN or the
Trading Partner directly? Would that be a deal breaker?

This actually speaks to a bigger issue that in all these years EDI continues to
be a messaging technology without a directory service, automated or otherwise.
No other messaging system would be taken seriously without this.

Could you imagine if you had to tell your phone company which other phone
company the number you are dialing is on? Could you imagine having to know the
IP address of the server for every e-mail you sent?

That the VANs have not agreed to share their directories with each other is to
me one of the key factors that continues to hold this industry back.

I have built a web services-based protocol for this (which is in active use
with

my own customers), offered to host this, created the first VAN Summit and
co-chaired the Connectivity Caucus at X12.

Unfortunately, the larger VANs continue to believe that their routing tables
are

proprietary and give them a competitive advantage.

I am committed to prevailing here and establishing an industry-wide directory
service that allows for instant, ubiquitous routing throughout all VANs and EDI
Service Providers. It can only benefit each trading partner individually and
the

industry as a whole.
