As a programmer I am used to writing applications which start out just doing their job - sunny day solutions. Then they get error checking added, and grow considerably in size and complexity. This is a never-ending story, because the number of possible error situations is, if not infinite, very large. At some point you decide that enough is enough and release the application to market. If the job has been done well unforeseen errors occur infrequently, but inevitably they do occur. You then have to decide what to do about them. Normally I change the app to handle the error. It may be an unlikely situation but at least it is an error which has happened, and thus is a lot more concrete than all its brethren who are still purely hypothetical. So I would go with management here - put in a fix. I agree that it is irritating to do so.
