I agree that Facebook can be a time consumer (don't play Farmville), but
LinkedIn is not really Facebook. LinkedIn is more based upon professional
profiles. LinkedIn is your "work" networking site, Facebook is your
personal networking site.
I am in a few groups on LinkedIn and I have received a few direct e-mails
per month from recruiters looking to fill positions. However, none of them
are in my geographical area and I am not able to relocate. They are not
positions that can be done remotely. I also regularly see (one or two per
day) jobs posted on the LinkedIn group discussions page(s) and receive an
e-mail per day from each group (my choice and my settings) and will see
those jobs listed there.
Social/Networking sites are what you make of them. If you allow yourself to
be sucked into it, you will lose that time. If you have the willpower to
stay away, then you will not lose that time. They're not really "new tricks"
for the old dog to learn. They're just a new way of repackaging a tool
you've used before in the past. Have you never gone to a conference or a
meeting for a job you've done...? Have you never connected with people with
similar interests and activities (career-wise) at these functions...? It's
all about networking - getting to know people in your career base and
cultivating a relationship with them. That's all that LinkedIn really is -
a larger, world-wide meeting or conference where you can connect with people
with similar interests and activities

Thanks Dave and Craig for the nice advice.
I have a LinkedIn account, and occasionally accept contacts and
such, but I have to admit that social-media isn't a tool that I use too
often. Old-dog-new-tricks I suppose. I've sworn off Farmtown and
Facebook as the greatest time-suck apps of all time, even surpassing
solitare (windows or linux versions). I suppose someday I'll need to embrace
it, at least LinkedIn anyway.
Sigh...the good ol' days.
At least it's Friday. Whooooo hoooooo!
