Agree with most of what you say, Doug. However, I first joined X12 in May
1987 - when membership was in the 300 range - and then saw it climb to the
600-700 range in the early 1990s - and then saw the rapid decline in 1999
going forward. So, my observation is that X12 membership peaked in the
mid-1990s and then began to decline in the early 2000s and is now somewhat
plateaued.

And I did mis-speak when I spoke of DISA financials - I should have more
correctly said X12. Re Steering Committee reporting, there is no open access
to any StC documents, minutes, etc. The only time a member can gain any
insight into StC activities is when one decides to observe during the
standing meetings. Interim StC meetings are not open to membership
observation.

You are correct, DISA/X12 does not release financial information.
Membership information is available at any Steering Committee meeting and I
believe the chair mentions it during the Monday general session.

I don't know if declining membership is correct. Last figures I recall
showed that we had 380 members on May 1st. In 2011, X12 had 600 members,
primarily due to the member discount provided for the X12N TR3's. So the
Steering Committee's goal of increasing membership by providing a discount
worked. Unfortunately, we have not been able to retain all those that
joined specifically for a discount.

That said, membership was lower during the time period of 2005 to 2009. So
overall membership has increased over the last 10 years.

I worked with Peter Drucker back in my days at the American Trucking
Associations. Yes, nothing lives forever. X12 has been trying to transform
itself, and as you know has discussed numerous ways to continue the good
work that it does.

Well, X12 has to find a sustainable business and revenue model, doesn't it
:-) especially with declining membership, consolidation and disbandment of
subcommittees, and declining sales of work products. Or course this is only
my observation since it's been years since DISA shared any information about
the status of the organization: e.g., number of members, revenues, operating
expenses, etc.

When real companies find themselves in this kind of a downward spiral they
either transform themselves or continue the death spiral. Many years ago in
one of Peter Drucker's books I recall reading that the average life span of
any organization is about 25 years - at which time it either transforms
itself, become acquisition target or goes out of business. Nothing lives
forever - does it :-)?

Mike, thanks again.

This would bring my "example" cost for non-members to $42,000 ($15,000 + (9
x $3,000)) and $21,000 for members. Wow! Now we are talking!
