Theoretically you are right. But in this case there is no
ambiguity for Russian - Kalma_go_raf.
"O" without stress is pronounced as "a".

I don't know about Russian, but some languages are a lot more phonetic
than English (not that it would take much).  I believe John Kemeny
(mathematician and past president of Dartmouth) was amazed at the time
American students spent learning to spell in comparison with his
native Hungary.  
 
Now, does anyone have anything to say about teaching statistics?-)
